Men
In my conversations with women the two constant areas of character evident in men that they are looking for are:
1. Self Awareness
2. Emotional Intelligence
I’ve lost count of the times I’ve had conversations with women who tell me they are looking for a man with high levels of self awareness and emotional intelligence.
One of my coaching specialities and great passions is to help men develop these areas of their life. I know from seeing men develop in these areas as well as from personal experience that growing in these two key areas will be transformational and life changing. The pay off is absolutely worth the time and effort involved.
Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the cornerstone of personal growth and development. It is the ability to objectively assess oneself, including one’s thoughts, emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and behavioural patterns. Individuals with high levels of self-awareness are better equipped to make informed decisions, manage their emotions effectively, build strong relationships, and achieve their goals.
Many individuals underestimate their own abilities and focus on their weaknesses. By identifying and leveraging their strengths, individuals can build confidence, boost their self-esteem, and achieve greater success.
For men, self-awareness can be particularly beneficial due to societal expectations and stereotypes that may influence their behaviour and emotions.
Here are a few reasons why self-awareness is important for men:
Swipe through the slides for details.
Self-Awareness
1. Breaking stereotypes
Society often imposes certain expectations on men, such as being strong, stoic, and unemotional. However, self-awareness allows men to challenge these stereotypes and embrace their full range of emotions, thoughts, and vulnerabilities. By being self-aware, men can explore and express their true selves, rather than conforming to societal expectations.
2. Mental Health
Men often face unique challenges when it comes to mental health, including stigma and a reluctance to seek help. Being self-aware allows men to recognise and address any issues they may be facing, such as stress, anxiety, or depression. By acknowledging their own mental health needs, men can seek appropriate support and take steps towards overall well-being.
3. Authenticity
Self-awareness helps men to connect with their authentic selves and live in alignment with their values and beliefs. By understanding their own strengths, weaknesses, and motivations, men can make choices that are true to who they are, rather than trying to fit into societal expectations or others’ opinions.
4. Healthy Relationships
Being self-aware enables men to have healthier and more fulfilling relationships. By understanding their own needs, desires, and boundaries, men can establish and maintain healthy boundaries, communicate effectively, and develop empathy towards their partners. This self-awareness also allows them to recognise and address any unhealthy patterns or behaviours that may be affecting their relationships.
When it comes to romantic relationships women are often attracted to men with self-awareness for several reasons:
Swipe through the slides for details.
Romantic Relationships
1. Emotional Connection
A man who is self-aware is more likely to have a deeper understanding of his own emotions and be able to communicate them effectively. This can create a stronger emotional connection and intimacy in a relationship.
2. Empathy & Understanding
Self-awareness allows a man to not only understand his own emotions but also be more empathetic and understanding towards the emotions of others, including his partner. This can foster a supportive and nurturing environment in the relationship.
3. Effective Communication
Self-awareness helps men recognise their own communication patterns and styles, enabling them to express themselves clearly and listen actively. This promotes healthier and more effective communication, reducing misunderstandings and conflicts in the relationship
4. Accountability & Growth
A man with self-awareness takes responsibility for his actions, behaviours, and their impact on the relationship. He is more open to feedback and willing to work on personal growth, which can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling partnership.
5. Respect for Boundaries
Self-awareness allows a man to understand his own needs, values, and limits. This makes him more likely to respect and honour the boundaries of his partner, creating a sense of safety and trust in the relationship
6. Relationship Satisfaction
When both partners possess self-awareness, it can create a dynamic where each person is actively working on their personal growth and understanding of themselves. This can lead to a more satisfying and fulfilling relationship as both individuals continue to evolve and support each other in their journey.
It is important to note that these reasons can vary from person to person, and not all women may prioritise self-awareness in a partner. However, overall, self-awareness is often seen as a desirable trait because it contributes to healthy communication, emotional connection, and personal growth within a relationship.
I can help you develop your level of self awareness and improve your existing relationship or enhance your ability to find the partner you are looking for.
Emotional Intelligence
Alongside Self Awareness, Emotional Intelligence is the key area women regularly communicate to me as being the most desired character trait in a potential partner. Development in this area is not exclusively beneficial in improving personal relationships but will help in many other areas of life including your work life, ability to lead well and be a great team player.
I specialise in helping men develop in this area.
Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to recognise, understand, and manage one’s own emotions, as well as to recognise and empathise with the emotions of others. It involves a set of skills that enable individuals to navigate and respond effectively to their own emotions and the emotions of those around them.

This involves recognising and understanding one’s own emotions, thoughts, and behaviours. It includes being aware of one’s strengths and weaknesses, values, and beliefs. Self-awareness allows individuals to understand how their emotions impact their actions and decision-making.
2. Self-Regulation
This component involves effectively managing and controlling one’s emotions. It includes being able to regulate impulsive reactions and responses, and instead choosing more appropriate and constructive ways to express and manage emotions. Self-regulation allows individuals to stay calm and composed in challenging situations.
3. Motivation
Emotional intelligence includes the ability to harness and direct emotions towards achieving goals. It involves having a sense of purpose, setting meaningful goals, and being driven to achieve them. Motivated individuals are often resilient and persistent in the face of obstacles.
4. Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. It involves being able to recognise and appreciate different perspectives, and to respond with compassion and sensitivity. Empathy allows individuals to build strong relationships, communicate effectively, and provide support to others.
5. Social Skills
This component refers to the ability to navigate social situations and build positive relationships. It includes effective communication, active listening, conflict resolution, and teamwork. Individuals with strong social skills are adept at building rapport and fostering collaboration.
Emotional intelligence is a valuable skillset in various aspects of life, including personal relationships, leadership, teamwork, and decision-making. It helps individuals understand and manage their own emotions, build stronger connections with others, and navigate social dynamics effectively. Developing emotional intelligence can lead to improved communication, conflict resolution, and overall well-being.

Resilience
I grew up in the 80’s when there was minimal parental supervision and health and safety was not really a thing! I also grew up on a farm where there were plenty of ways to get in to trouble……daily…..which I did! I started work at 16 as an apprentice blacksmith and travelled, on a moped, 1 hour to work and back every day and worked 8am-6pm and 8am-2pm on a Saturday. Resilience just happened back then, well for me anyway.
Things are very different now, my experience raising kids, 2 boys and a girl. Soft play, bike helmets, smart phones, snapchat, YouTube etc., etc., etc., etc… Resilience does not automatically develop in the lives of people as it once did and being more intentional about developing resilience has become necessary.
I first heard the term ‘Man Baby’ a few years ago during a conversation with a woman talking about her struggle to find a partner. It made me laugh but it is true to say there are plenty of Man babys out there and developing resilience will for sure help to address any man baby tendencies. I’m sure there is a female equivalent to the man baby situation I just haven’t yet heard the term……maybe you can enlighten me here?
